Hospice at Home West Cumbria was established in 1987.  It exists to provide the best possible palliative care to terminally ill patients, to give help and support to their carers/loved ones, and to make its services available to everybody in West Cumbria who needs them.

The heart of our operation is our home nursing service, giving skilled nursing support on a one-to-one basis to anyone with a terminal illness in their own home.  This provides respite care for patients and their families; it enables terminally ill patients to remain at home and dying patients to be discharged from hospital to their own homes.   We are one of the very few providers of home nursing for the terminally ill, and were one of the two hospices that pioneered this service in 1987.

Additionally we provide two Drop-In Centres, two Day Centres, a Lymphoedema Service, and a Bereavement Support Service.  Patients can get Complementary Therapy treatment at the Drop-In and Day Centres or in their own homes.  All services are provided free. The NHS provides sufficient funding to cover about 1/3 of our costs.  The rest, £350,000 a year, has to be raised locally through voluntary donations, fundraising and legacies.

Please try to raise as much money as possible for this worthy charity through the ride.  Most importantly, remember to enjoy yourself; this is challenge you should be proud of.

Useful fundraising tips

Target - Set yourself a target of, say, £100 and if you can exceed that set another.  Don’t stop asking until the day of the ride.  Tell people we are aiming to raise £5000 in 2008 - our greatest amount yet.

Ask - Most people are willing to give money to charity but few go out of their way to do so.  The more people you ask, the more money you will raise.

Family first - Get your most generous sponsors at the top of your sponsor forms.  People find it difficult not to follow this example.

Collect - Collect the money there and then if possible.  It saves a lot of legwork later.  Write a note to say you will return the pledge if you do not complete the ride if necessary.

Spread the word - Send out a group/building email asking for sponsorship (please seek line managers’ approval first).  Give our website a mention – www.whitehavencyclefundraisers.co.uk.

Network - Ask your partner, family, friends and work colleagues first.  Then email or print off sponsor forms and ask them to approach people on your behalf.  This is very effective and uses little of your time.

Counter attack - If you are a member of a gym or leisure club ask if they will place a form in the reception area.  If they are willing to pledge cash then let us know and we can give them a mention on the website.  Ask your local shop, pub!

Get in touch - You may have some useful contacts on your Christmas card list, in your address book, on you mobile.  Ask people to pledge by text or email if they wish.

Good luck and thank you!
